Natural Healing Is Part of the Kingdom

Many Christians fall into two extremes. One camp would say that there is no need for supernatural healing and the other would like to say all sickness is the result of spiritual forces. However, I must disagree with both camps.

This is especially made clear in Luke 6.18 where Jesus heals based upon a disease as compared to a demonic affliction:

  • Luke 6:18 ESV – 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.

Not all sicknesses have a demonic root nor necessarily require supernatural healing.

Consider the following verses whereby the Holy Spirit reveals healing can result from natural or medicinal remedies:

  • Lev 13.1-46 – Leprosy and boils are attributed to natural diseases and require natural precautions and remedies.
  • Lev 14.1-32 – Again, leprosy and boils are attributed to natural diseases and require natural precautions and remedies.
  • Lev 15.1-33 – bodily discharges are considered not safe to be exposed to with precautions recommended to be taken (that is, do not expose yourself unnecessarily to other people’s blood and body fluids, a practice still followed today).
  • 2 Chr 28.15 – people are required to take care of one another to promote good health, such as proper clothing, food and drink, and rest when needed.
  • 2 Kings 20.7 – figs can be used as medicine to heal a boil
  • Isaiah 38.21 – likewise figs again can be used as medicine to heal a boil.
  • Eccl 3.3 – there is a time to heal (the body naturally repairing itself).
  • Eze 34.4 – sometimes, wounds need to be bound up (that is covered over to prevent disease).
  • Eze 47.12 – eating proper food is necessary for healing even in the New Jerusalem, which would imply that poor health is not necessarily the result of living in a sin-filled world and nor the direct result of the fall, just the byproduct of needing to take care of oneself to function properly.
  • Nah 3.19 – implies emotional wounds can prevent healing.

Many Christians consider the idea that they need to see a doctor or take medications as somehow less spiritual of healing than if it is instantaneous by Jesus. Yet the Holy Spirit provides both miraculous gifts of healing as well as wisdom through Scripture for the ability to be healed and maintain health.
